Taal folks waiting to be resettled

MANANG: An entire settlement has been inundated and turned into a riverine wasteland due to the massive flooding that occurred on June 15.

Fifty-nine households at Taalgaon in Nasoun rural municipality-1 were displaced by the flooding due to the swollen Marsyangdi river following incessant rain.

They have been living in tents on a hillside above the village and are desperately waiting for their resettlement.

It is not safe to resettle the displaced families in their previous settlement. “It has been over one and half months since our settlement was ravaged by the flood. We are worried we are not going to be resettled any time soon. We don’t know how long we will have to live under the tent,” said Mohan Gurung, a local said, expressing exasperation.

The whole Taal village is waterlogged at present. It is said there is no suitable place on the hillside as well for resettling the displaced families. This has added to their woes. Taalgaon is entirely waterlogged following the flooding.

Kanchhi Maya Gurung said, “We are helpless except merely watching the submerged village. We had never known this scale of disaster before.”

The displaced families of Taalgaon feel that the government itself should do something for resettling them. There is very little possibility of resettlement at the Taalgaon and because of this reason also the locals have urged the government to relocate them to some safer area.

The locals of Taalgaon have been living under tents for one and half months. They complain that although various organizations have been providing foodstuff to the flood-affected people, there has not been any initiative from the government side. RSS
