15 UML Nepal faction leaders slam DPM Mahato’s statement

KATHMANDU: Fifteen CPN-UML leaders have protested the statement made by newly-appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) leader Rajendra Mahato.

Fifteen leaders, including Madhav Kumar Nepal, issued a joint statement on Saturday objecting to Mahato’s remarks. Leaders have objected to Mahato raising the agenda of creating a multinational state that, they say, was rejected by the Nepali people.

The statement said it was reprehensible to make a statement against the national interest and integrity by reiterating making Nepal a multinational state, despite the Constituent Assembly and the Nepali people rejecting such an idea in the past.

Mahato’s statement, as per the leaders, is against the provisions of Article 3 of the Constitution, which stipulates that Nepal is a nation comprising multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-religious, multi-cultural population with geographical diversity sharing equal aspirations and believing in Nepal’s national independence, geographical integrity, national interest and prosperity.

The leaders also demanded that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli clarify Mahato’s statement against the constitution.
