Majority of leaders in Nepal-Khanal faction in favor of a new party

KATHMANDU: Most of the leaders of the Nepal Khanal faction of the ruling CPN-UML have stressed the need to move ahead by forming a new party stating that there is no option to it.

According to a central committee (CC) member who participated in the meeting, most of the leaders are in favor of forming a new party while some are of the opinion that they should render efforts to keep the party united until the last minute.

These two different views were expressed in the CC meetings of the disgruntled faction that lasted for two days (Thursday and Friday).

“Some of the leaders in the CC meeting on Friday suggested rendering efforts to keep the party united until the last minute while the other many leaders underlined the need to form a new party,” said a CC member.

In the CC meeting held virtually, many leaders suggested forming a new party saying that the party unity is next to impossible.

The CC meeting also decided to give continuity to the formation of parallel committees as well as holding talks with the establishment.

“The disgruntled faction in the meeting decided not to waste time holding talks with the establishment for a long time but to continue forming parallel committees even during the pandemic,” said another CC member.

Speaking in the meeting, senior leader Madhav Nepal suggested that they should take a bold decision stating that party chair KP Sharma Oli will not rectify him, according to the leader.

The Oli-faction is trying to weaken the Nepal-Khanal faction by enticing its second rung leaders. These leaders have been voicing for the party unity, the CC member said.
