NC holds ward conventions in 35 districts across country

KATHMANDU: The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has held ward conventions in 35 districts across the country on Friday.

Mahadev Yadav, coordinator of the Central Election Committee, said ward conventions were scheduled to be held in 38 districts but took place only in 35 districts. He said, “Ward conventions should have been held in 38 districts today in the first phase. We can ascertain that conventions were held in 35 districts. The status of the remaining three districts has not been known as of now.”

According to Yadav, majority of ward conventions took place unanimously. However, he said the results of the districts were yet to received. He said results were expected by Saturday.

The result of the only one district reached the Central Election Committee Friday. According to coordinator Yadav, the entire result of Dolakha district arrived. He informed that conventions were held unanimously in 73 out of 74 wards in Dolakha, and election was held in one ward.

Though ward conventions were held in half of the around 6,000 wards in the country Friday, active membership dispute in 21 districts has yet to be finalized. The Central Election Committee has so far deployed election officials in only 56 districts. Coordinator Yadav said that no decision has been taken about the remaining 21 districts.

The NC ward convention is to select the ward-level working committee and the local level convention, the provincial constituency convention, the federal constituency convention, the general convention representative and the regional representative who will cast vote in the district convention.

This is the preliminary election of the General Convention as the delegates from the ward will also elect the delegates of the General Convention. The ward convention itself plays an important role in the selection of future leadership.
