Landslide, flood victims still waiting for house reconstruction ahead of another monsoon

BAGLUNG: The flood and landslide victims who lost their homes due to the disasters are still waiting for reconstruction in the district.

Though there are three tiers of the government in the country, the victims are not addressed by anyone even after a year.

The victims in all 10 local levels in the district have been living under the makeshift houses and tents in the winter and spring season. Now they are worried about the approaching monsoon season.

Ishwar Poudel, a victim of Jaimini Municipality-1 complained that eight houses were damaged in the landslides but no single house is reconstructed so far.

According to the district disaster management committee report, a total of 632 houses were damaged in the floods and landslides in the district last year.

Of the total displaced, 21 households don’t have their own land plot to reconstruct the house. However, 52 houses could be fit for living only after retrofitting.

Although the federal government has announced Baglung, Myagdi, and Sindhupalchok districts as disaster-hit districts, no initiations have been taken to reconstruct the houses of the flood and landslide victims in the district so far.

Dhorpatan Municipality mayor Devkumar Nepali shared that they were waiting for reconstruction bids from the concerned sides and the federal government. The municipality has made makeshift houses from the relief funds.
