PM vows to make representation of Dalits mandatory in party’s general convention

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has expressed the commitment to mandatorily have the representation of the Dalits and the Muslims in every ward in the party’s upcoming ward convention.

The NC president said this during a meeting with party central members Man Bahadur Bishwokarma and Jeevan Pariyar at his residence in Baluwatar Thursday. He said he would make every possible effort to have the compulsory representation of the Dalit and the Muslim communities in the party’s ward-level convention.

It may be recalled here that the Nepali Congress central member and the Nepal Dalit Association’s central president, Meen Bishwokarma, had announced his resignation from the party central member and the Association’s president, citing the party has made its election guidelines not ensuring the Dalits’ representation right from the selection of representatives in the run up to the party’s 14th general convention.

The Election Guidelines to be implemented in a conspiratorial manner meting out injustice and humiliation to the Dalit community would not be acceptable to the Dalit Association, Bishwokarma said in a statement.

The Association has also organized a sit-in protest at the Nepali Congress central office Thursday, calling for compulsory representation of the Dalit community from the ward level to the party’s general assembly.
