KATHMANDU: Scores of settlements have been inundated in Parsa district due to incessant rainfall in the areas since Tuesday night.

One of the reasons for the inundation is the poor drainage in these settlements. It is said that the drains have collapsed or broken at several sections due to the substandard construction. Moreover, the drains have become clogged due to the haphazardly strewn trash and plastic waste.

Water from the drains has entered the houses and shops in the settlements due to the clogged drains. The settlements located near the rivulets and rivers have been waterlogged due to the flooding caused by these rivulets which have swollen due to the incessant rains. The swollen rivers have also washed away cultivated land at some places. Brahmanagar, Naya Basti, Nirmal Basti, Milan Chowk, Aathghare, Bijaybasti, Shanti Tol, Bishal Chowk, Sundar Tol, Tyangreline, among the settlements have been badly inundated in Thori rural municipality of western Parsa, the Area Police Office, Thori, said.

Likewise, most of the settlements to the north of the recently-constructed Hulaki Sadak (Postal Road) that are in the low-lying areas have become inundated. However, no human casualties have been reported from the areas so far.

Meanwhile, the swollen Oriyakhola rivulet has washed away a section of the Birgunj Thori Hulaki Sadak near the Gopibasti settlement. The flooded rivulet has washed away the embankment constructed to protect the road thus eroding the section of the road. Movement of people and vehicles has been disrupted in the area due to this. Likewise, flooding caused by the swollen rivulet has caused damage to settlements from Ward Number 1 to 4 at Thori rural municipality.

Many settlements in Dhobini rural municipality, Jagarnathpur rural municipality, Chhipaharmai rural municipality and Jirabhawani rural municipality have been waterlogged, affecting the normal life there.
