Finance Ministry clarifies policy on Chure mining activities



KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Finance has stated that the government is committed to the protection of the Chure region as the government is being criticized widely after making the budget announcement of reducing trade deficit by extracting and exporting river products from the Chure region.

Issuing a statement Wednesday, the Finance Ministry clarified its policy of carrying out excavation of mines in suitable areas other than Chure region and Shivalik areas and river systems as identified by the Department of Mines and Geology and as per the Environmental Impact Assessment report.

The government is committed to prevent the exploitation of river products from the Chure area and negative impact on the environment, the statement said.

The Ministry of Finance has stated that the government is committed to make procedures, guidelines, criteria and legal arrangements based on the suggestions received after discussing with the concerned government bodies, environmentalists, subject matter experts and stakeholders and to prevent adverse impact on the environment and livelihood.
