KATHMANDU: Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli is likely to seek a vote of confidence in the parliament on May 10, sources close to him said.
The PM informed the Cabinet about his decision at the meeting being held at Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar Sunday.
According to sources, PM Oli will seek a vote of confidence likely on May 10 at the parliament.
The move comes at a time when opposition parties are working to table a no-confidence motion against the PM.
The government has recommended convening a session of parliament on May 10. The Cabinet has decided to this effect.
A Prime Minister can at anytime seek a vote of confidence at the parliament to ensure majority support to his government. To remain in office, PM Oli must have the support of 138 lawmakers.
Currently, the CPN-UML has 121 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives. The Nepali Congress (NC) has 63 seats, the CPN-Maoist Center has 49 seats, Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) has 34 seats, the Nepal Mazdoor Kisan Party, the Rastriya Janamorcha and the RPP and the Independent has one seat each.
Two members of the NC and two members of the JSP have been suspended.
Although the Maoist Center has not yet withdrawn its support to the government, it has been working with the NC and the JSP to form a new government. The NC has decided to form a government under its own leadership.
