MELAMCHI: The flooded Melamchi and Helambu rivers in Sindhupalchowk have swept away as many as 13 houses due to incessant rains since Saturday night.

According to Baburam Khanal, Assistant Chief District Officer of Sindhupalchowk, seven concrete, and six thatched houses were washed away by the floods in the rivers.

He informed that the houses — damaged by last month’s floods were repaired – have been damaged beyond repair.

Meanwhile, floods in the Melamchi river last night have damaged the building housing the Melamchi radio station.

The building was swept away at around 12:40 last night, said Radio Melamchi Chair Damber Rasik.

It may be noted that the floods triggered by incessant rainfall had swept away houses and land, and converted Helambu, Kiul and Melamchi market into a desert on July 15.

The building was abandoned and the radio station was being operated from a different location.

The floods have also washed away a suspension bridge and another concrete bridge.

Assistant Chief District Officer Khanal said that the suspension bridge at Gyalthum connecting wards 3 and 4 of Helambu village municipality was damaged beyond repair.

Meanwhile, the local administration has urged the people living in and around the Melamchi river bank to stay alert.

With the collapse of the bridge, traffic in the area has been closed. The floods have also washed away a suspension bridge in Gyalthum.

According to Rajan Adhikari, Superintendent of Police, District Police Office, Sindhupalchowk, Gyalthum Bazaar is also at risk due to rising water level in the river.
