WHO declares global emergency as coronavirus death toll reaches 213

KATHMANDU: The new coronavirus has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization as the death toll from China virus climbs to 213.

The coronavirus has already spread to 18 countries including Germany, Japan, Vietnam and the United States while over  7,736 have been infected with the virus.

“The main reason for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries,” BBC quoted WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as saying.

The concern is that it might spread to countries with weaker health systems.

The WHO said there had been 98 cases in 18 other countries, but no deaths. Most cases have emerged in people who have traveled from the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the new virus broke out, according to the reports.
