How does govt compensate migrant workers killed from Coronavirus?



KATHMANDU: With the Coronavirus pandemic taking a missive toll across the world, it has not spared Nepali migrant workers, too.

Fifty four migrant workers have died due to Coronavirus pandemic across the world so far.

According to the Health Committee under the Non Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Coronavirus has killed 33 Nepalis in the United Kingdom, 15 in the US, two in the UAE, one each  in Ireland, Japan, Turkey and the Netherland.

Similarly, a total of 1, 983 NRNs have been infected with the COVID-19 whereas 434 have recovered after treatment, said NRNA.

The Nepal government has not taken any official decision regarding the compensation to the family of the Nepali migrant workers who die abroad from Coronavirus.

The government has been proving Rs 700,000 to the family of a Nepali migrant worker who dies abroad in the line of duty.

Besides, the family of a Nepali migrant worker gets Rs 1.4 million in insurance from the government including free delivery of the body and scholarship to the children of the deceased.

However, the government is yet to decide on the compensation to the family of the Nepali migrant workers who died abroad from Coronavirus, said Rajendra Prasad Pandey, Executive Director of the Board.
