TOKYO: As many as 78 Nepali international students attending the Japanese language school JSL Japan Academy in Nakanishi, Urasoe City were not allowed to renew their status of residence due to illegal employment.
According to the school, the Fukuoka Regional Immigration Bureau Naha Branch notified that the students were required to leave Japan within three months. Some international students have already left Japan.
Of the 142 students who enrolled in July last year, 78 could not renew their status of residence. The extension of stay for half a year was not allowed because it exceeded the legal working hours. After graduating, many students decided to go on to vocational schools inside and outside.
International students can work part-time within 28 hours a week with the permission of the government. The school explained that it has strengthened its response as it was required to thoroughly manage whether there was “overwork” exceeding 28 hours a week due to the revision of the national standard in September last year.
The school is also refraining from applying for a visa renewal for 80 students who enrolled in October last year, saying, “If the same situation continues, school management will become very difficult.”
According to the school, the number of international students accepted as a penalty is expected to be reduced.
For students who are leaving Japan, the school will pay the tuition fee refund, return travel expenses, and PCR test fee for the new coronavirus.
The school’s tuition fee is 600,000 yen while the fee including dormitory and national insurance costs some 1 million yen.
