KATHMANDU: The Women and Social Development Committee under the House of Representatives has passed the annual work progress report.

The Committee meeting held today endorsed the draft report with the amendment, as said by Committee President Nirudevi Pal. The report will be presented in the upcoming HoR session. Issues concerning women, children, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and social sectors are the jurisdictions of the body.

The Committee in the past year went through discussions on several important issues and directed and urged the government for several things at different times.

The report states the success in removing Chhaugoths in the Karnali region as the major achievement of the year. Besides, the Committee in this period endorsed the Senior Citizens Bill and made the government to immediately make corrections in regard to single women’s social security allowance. Its efforts for an end to misconduct in children’s homes led to the repeal of over 70 such homes and this has been incorporated as the achievement in the report.

More, the Committee had instructed the government to bring the Bal Mandir ( Children’s Organisation) structure under its ownership, regulate them and own up the responsibility of taking care of Bal Mandir (Children’s Organisation) children and the direction is in the phase of implementation.

The government has assimilated its directions for regulating national and international non-government organizations and implementing the provision of reward and punishment in the related sector and improvement in the Social Welfare Council.

Prior to this, during the meeting, the Committee members described the Rukum Paschim carnage as ‘a bleak picture’ of the caste-based discrimination in the 21st century and spoke the need of warning the government towards not letting such incidents reoccurring.

Member Bimala BK stressed that the Committee should carry out an in-depth study of the case and take further steps accordingly.
