Coronavirus kills 1, 555, infects 55, 440 in SAARC region



KATHMANDU: Coronavirus has killed 1,555 people in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) region as of Wednesday morning.

According to the latest figures collated by Worldometer, 1,008 died in India, 327 in Pakistan, 155 in Bangladesh, 58 in Afghanistan, and seven in Sri Lanka, taking the total death toll to 1,555 in the SAARC member states.

Even though the infection cases are rising in Nepal and Maldives, the condition of Bhutan seems to be under control. No one has died from the Covid-19 in these countries so far.

India, the worst-hit among SAARC member states, comes fourth in Asia with the highest number of deaths. Iran is the worst-hit with 5,877 deaths in Asia followed by China with 4,633. Similarly, 2,992 died in Turkey (3rd), 1,008 in India (fourth).

India

The death toll in India has reached 1,008 as of Wednesday morning. With eight new cases, the number of infection cases has climbed to 31, 332. Currently, 22, 577 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the country. Meanwhile, 7,747 have returned home after recovery.

Pakistan

Pakistan, the second worst-hit in the SAARC region, has witnessed 327deaths after 15 died in the last 24 hours. With 273 new cases, the number of infection cases has reached 14, 885 have been infected. The number of deaths surged to 128 after 17 more.

Currently, 11, 133 are undergoing treatment, of which 111 are critical. Meanwhile, 3, 425 have recovered after treatment.

Bangladesh

The death toll in Bangladesh has climbed to 155 while 6, 462 have been infected as of Wednesday morning. Currently, 6, 168 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the country, of which 1 is critical. Meanwhile, 139 have recovered after treatment.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan has reported 58 deaths while 1,828 people have been infected as of Wednesday morning. Currently, 1,542 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals while 228 people have recovered after treatment.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has reported seven deaths and 619 infection cases. Currently, 478 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals, of which two are critical. Meanwhile, 134 have returned home after recovery.

Nepal

The number of COVID-19 infected people in Nepal has reached 57 after three more diagnosed with the novel virus on Wednesday. 16 among those infected with the virus have returned home after recovery. No one has died from the novel virus so far in the country.

Maldives

The number of infection cases has reached 250 in the Maldives. A total of 17 of them have returned home after treatment. Currently, 233 people are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the country, of which two are critical.  No one has died from Coronavirus so far in the country.

Bhutan

Bhutan is the least affected country in the SAARC region.

Bhutan has seven infection cases. Five among those infected with the novel virus have returned home after treatment while the 2 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals. No one has died in so far in the country.
