ANKARA: At least 40 people, including 11 children, were killed when a bomb detonated in the Syrian town of Afrin, international media reports have said.
The Syrian Kurdish YPG militia has been blamed for the attack.
The blast occurred in a crowded area in Afrin, reports said. A video showed black smoke billowing in the air.
The United States has condemned the attack. State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said the attack claimed the lives of dozens of people shopping in the market as they prepared to break the Ramadan fast.
She reiterated a U.S. call for a ceasefire in Syria.
The blast was one of the deadliest one to hit the region under the control of Turkish-backed forces.
