Locusts move to Palpa, Syangja, Kavre

KATHMANDU: The locusts that entered Bara, Parsa and Sarlai from Uttar Pradesh of India on Saturday morning have shifted to other areas of Nepal in line with the course taken by the wind.

According to Sahadev Humagain, chief of Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Center, the locusts seen in Nawalpur of Sarlahi have shifted to other areas. The locusts seen in Bhairahawa have shifted to Butwal,  Papla and Syangja.

Similarly, locusts seen in Sindhuli have shifted to Chiyabari and those in Parsa have flown to Chitwan district.

Locusts have shifted to Makwanur and Kavre from Bara.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock is making preparations to minimize the loss to be caused by the locusts.

According to Hari Bahadur KC, the Spokesperson for the Ministry, local units will arrange pesticides and necessary tools to tackle the harmful insects.

If they come in large numbers, the federal government will provide tanker and firefighter and a locust information center will be established to study their movement.

The information center which will come into operation from Monday will be established at Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Center.

The Center will inform where the locusts have reached, what steps have been taken to control them and take stock of damages caused by them.

Meanwhile, the government is consulting with experts from India, Pakistan and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to effectively control of the locusts.
