South Korea imposes ban on 31 types of diabetes drugs

SEOUL: South Korea has banned the production and sales of 31 different types of drugs previously used for diabetes, arguing that the carcinogen substance to be used in those drugs could cause cancer.

According to the public health authorities, the drugs containing carcinogen were banned after the recommendations of research since they could cause cancer.

Those banned drugs are metformin-based medication with 257 other diabetes drugs are also being checked for carcinogen, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety stated. There are 260,000 users of these drugs.

Of the drugs checked, 31 contained the higher level of N-Nitrosodiumthylamine.
