NHRC demands probe into Rautahat incident

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded an investigation into the Rautahat incident where a Dalit youth accused of murder had died during the treatment after he was in police detention.

Bijayaram Chamar, who was accused of murdering Niranjan Ram of Garuda Municipality-8 in Rautahat district, had died in course of treatment at Birgunj-based National Medical College on August 27.

The human rights watchdog, issuing a press statement on Friday, condemned the incident to be inhumane and criminal one and demanded a fair and thorough investigation into it.

Furthermore, the NHRC has demanded action against the culprit and urged the government and state organs to ensure that such incidents would not occur again.

The Province-2 office of NHRC in Janakpur began looking into the matter for there was an assumption that the arrested Dalit youth must have died due to police torture.

The Commission also demanded a copy of the post-mortem report and health report card of the deceased. RSS
