KATHMANDU: Eight new languages have been discovered in Nepal, according to a recent study carried out by the government.
With this, the number of languages spoken in Nepal has reached 131. Earlier, the number of languages spoken in Nepal was 123, according to the census 2068 BS.
With the implementation of the federal political set up in the country, the government had formed a language commission to recommend official languages in federal, provincial and local levels for the protection and promotion of the Nepali languages.
According to a recent study carried out by the language commission, Rana Tharu, Nar Phu, Chum (Syar), Poike, Serake, Marek, Yakkha, Nawa Sherpa are the new languages recently discovered in Nepal.
The language commission has submitted a report on the new discovery of the languages to the Office of the President. This is the fourth report of the commission.
