Family members refuse to receive Alam’s body



JHAPA: Family members have denied receiving the body of Rafikul Alam killed in a police action at Kamatoli of Jhapa rural municipality-3.

Alam,38, a local, was killed when Armed Police Force (APF) personnel opened fire on a crowd in retaliation on Wednesday night.

APF personnel fired shots at the crowd when locals, involved in a dispute on slaughtering an ox, attacked them all of a sudden.

Critically injured Alam, who was rushed to the hospital, died while receiving treatment at the Birtamod-based B&C Hospital, according to Durga Prasai, the Chairperson of the hospital.

The dispute took an ugly turn after the police arrested two locals on Wednesday night on the charge of slaughtering an ox.

They resorted to opening fires after a huge number of irate locals attacked them.

The kith and kin of the victim have upped the ante demanding compensation, stringent action against the police who killed Alam, right to follow the religion based secularism.

The family members and the local administration are currently holding talks to settle the negotiation.
