Coronavirus fear grips Jhapa prison

JHAPA: Seven inmates have been found infected with Coronavirus in Jhapa prison. This has led to a sense of terror among the inmates in the jail that is housing triple its capacity.

Last week, a prisoner being taken to Kathmandu was confirmed positive to Coronavirus. Another seven were found infected on Friday. They are undergoing treatment at the Mechi State hospital in Bhadrapur.

There are 82 women and 1,061 men in Jhapa prison serving jail sentence and those remanded to judicial custody.

Seasonal fever has also spread along with Coronavirus. However, it is very difficult to maintain social distancing due to overload of prisoners, said chief of Jhapa prison Rajendra Gautam. A block inside the prison will be used as an isolation center considering the rise in the number of infected.
