KATHMANDU: Sonam Lhosar, the festival of Tamang community, was observed with much fanfare by organizing various programs across the country.

Tamang people celebrated the festival at Tundikhel in the capital. The festival runs for two days – today and tomorrow.

Lho means Year and Sar stands for New, which combined means New Year.

Tamang people have a unique tradition of marking each year with 12 distinct creatures which are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog and Boar.

This year the Tamang community is celebrating the year of rat which starts from January 25.
