Intermediaries involved in settling rape cases to get 3 years in jail



KATHMANDU: A legal arrangement of six months to three years in jail and Rs 30,000 in fine has been made against those brokering to settle the rape cases.

A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Sunday approved the ordinance designed to amend some acts against sexual violence and recommended it before the President.

The new arrangements in the ordinance have been made to discourage the rape case and book the individuals trying to broker to settle such crime.

Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe said that the government has unveiled the ordinance in order to increase the punishment of guilty of rape case and to bring those involving to encourage or exerting pressure in settling the cases to book.

Minister Tumbahamphe added, “There is a legal arrangement of six months to three years of jail term and Rs 30,000 in fine to those involved in settling rape case. Six months of imprisonment will be added on it against them if they are in public posts.”

She opined that it was necessary to bring the ordinance immediately as cases of violence are found increasing in the society.

Punishment for the guilty of rape case has been increased in the ordinance. An arrangement of 12 to 16 years in imprisonment has been made against the guilty of raping 14-16 years person in the new law to be implemented. Earlier it was 12-14 years in imprisonment.

Similarly, there will be a jail term of 10-14 years against those involved in raping a person of 16 to 18 years.

Likewise, one has to face 10 to 12 years in jail for raping a person of 18 years or above.
The ordinance has no exemption in punishment to guilty in case of rape of senior citizens.
