NEW DELHI: Millions of people across India stayed indoors on Sunday in what has been termed as an ‘unprecedented shutdown’ on Prime Minister Narendra Modi”s appeal for a ‘Janata curfew’ to check the spread of coronavirus.

Streets in different cities, including major ones, wore a deserted look. Very few vehicles are plying the roads today.

The 14-hour ‘Janata curfew’ got underway at 7 am on Sunday as people kept themselves indoors in a bid to ‘social distancing’ exercise. It will end at 9 pm today.

All market places and organizations barring those dealing in essential goods and services have been closed for the day, Indian media reports have said.

Prime Minister Modi took to Twitter, urging people to stay indoors and stay healthy.

In New Delhi, roads are deserted with very few numbers of private vehicles and buses plying.

Kolkata, too, wore a deserted look as people stayed indoors.

Likewise, financial capital Mumbai observed the restrictions today with people staying indoors to support the curfew.

Goa, a tourist destination, followed the curfew call.

Except for essential services, everything such as commercial establishments, bus services, markets, restaurants, and places of worship have been shut in major Indian cities.
