Youths demonstrate in Kathmandu against China (In pics)

KATHMANDU:  A demonstration has taken place against China at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu on Saturday.

Youths took part in the demonstration, holding placards reading ‘Back Off China,’ ‘Stop Foreign Intervention,’ ‘Stop Land Encroachment,’ and ‘Stop Chinese Expansionism.’

There have been protests in the Kathmandu Valley against China over its intervention in the internal politics of Nepal and encroachment of the Nepali territory.

We have protested against the encroachment of Nepali land by China in Namkha in Humla district”, said one of the protesters Jeet Chhetri from Humla.

He added that they were compelled to protest against China after it constructed buildings in an ‘unethical and heinous manner’.

“Youths like us are ready to do anything for the protection of Nepali land. China has newly-constructed Pillar no 12 without consulting with Nepali authorities.

The government has paid no heed to the issue. The protest will continue until and unless a conclusion is reached,” he said.

Foreign affairs experts say China has been insistently trying to shape politics in its favor in Nepal, of late.

In Kathmandu, while Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Hou Yanqi remains busy in patching up differences among the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leaders, Chinese Defense Minister and State Councilor Wei Fenghe makes a visit to Nepal later this month.

Meanwhile, Minister for Foreign Affairs of China Wang Yi, too, is visiting Nepal in the last week of November, Nepali officials have said.

Yi’s Nepal visit is viewed as significant at a time when there has been unprecedented intervention in Nepal’s internal politics by Chinese Ambassador Yanqi.
