NHRC calls for protection of child rights

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has appealed to the government and all stakeholders to protect the rights of the children.

In a press statement issued by the NHRC’s Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokhrel here Friday, the human-rights watchdog in the country called for collaboration to eliminate child marriage, child labor, and sexual exploitation of
the children.

Furthermore, the NHRC has requested for collective effort for the effective implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, constitutional and legal provisions to ensure rights to children, court’s orders and recommendations furnished by the NHRC to secure the welfare of the children.

Citing the harsh reality facing the children in remote areas and those from a poor and impoverished family in availing education in the Covid-19 crisis, the NHRC has drawn the attention of the concerned authorities to ensure their access to education by employing the alternative teaching-learning in view of the disruption in education since the nationwide lockdown enforced to contain the spread of Covid-19.

“Owing to various reasons such as fear of social ouster and murder, many children in the country are suffering from sexual violence and exploitation and such survivors are bereaved of right to justice,” the NHRC said, expressing its dismay over the justice delayed to such survivors.
