Postponed time and again, NCP Standing Committee meeting slated for today

KATHMANDU: The Standing Committee meeting of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) that has been postponed over and again has been slated for Sunday afternoon.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at the prime minister’s official residence in Baluwatar at 3 pm.

With no consensus on sight regarding disputes within the party, NCP on Friday had postponed the Standing Committee meeting and held a Secretariat meeting on Saturday.

However, the much-anticipated Secretariat meeting too failed to make headway in resolving the contentious issues of the party.

Spokesperson Narayankaji Shrestha had informed that the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar concluded with a decision to hold further discussions.

“In the meeting, the two Chairpersons and other leaders discussed how to address and resolve the party’s internal crisis on the basis of consensus to address the needs of the nation,” he had said.

He had added that the Standing Committee meeting slated for today afternoon will continue.

During the meeting, PM KP Oli had proposed holding unity convention in November-December.

The proposal from the prime minister came at the time when he is under immense pressure to resign both as Prime Minister and party Chairman.

Sources said another Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda also agreed with the proposal.

However, some leaders, including senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, were skeptical about holding the general convention.

Soon after the meeting, Oli and Prachanda reached Sheetal Niwas and discussed the issue with President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

The Standing Committee meeting slated for today is expected to discuss the proposal on General Convection.
