KATHMANDU: A high-level meeting of the Nepal Army (NA) has begun to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and the possibility of violent political outbreak in the country at its headquarters in Kathmandu on Friday.
Chief of Army Staffs General Purna Chandra Thapa, senior officials of NA including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals and Lieutenant Generals and heads of different divisions are attending the meeting.
According to CoAS Thapa, the meeting called in short notice will discuss various factors ranging from the unusual situation induced by COVID-19, NA’s constitutional involvement in the pandemic control, the security threats caused by the NCP Biplav outfit.
The meeting will come out with the input for prospective Action Plan on the issues raised by the Army Chief in the inauguration speech.
NA Chief Thapa reiterated NA’s commitment to uproot corruption in the army and also execute the duties assigned by the government esp. in COVID-19 pandemic control.
Hinting at the irregularities allegations related with the procurement of health materials, he asked the officials to maintain transparency, sincerity, honesty and hard work keeping nation and constitutional responsibility as top priority.
Citing the high number of returnees from various countries and the unemployment problem that’s almost sure to affect the mass, he asked the officials to be alert at the challenges the depression in the people and the unemployment might bring.
General Thapa wanted the officials to work out on the possibilities of the upset public misled by some forces waiting to take advantage of the unusual situation.
Although NA used to have senior officials meeting in every six months, the routine was disrupted due to various reasons in the past.
Army Chief Thapa had also visited the Chhangru Security Post of Armed Police Force on Thursday.
