Bhatta recommended for TRC, Subedi for CIEDP

KATHMANDU: Officer-bearers for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP) have been recommended.

From the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC), Ganesh Dutta Bhatta has been recommended Chairman of TRC and Prachandaman Shrestha a member.

Likewise, Govinda Gautam, Man Dahal and Bishnu Pokharel have been recommended as members for the commission from the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP).

Similarly from NCP, Yuvaraj Subedi has been recommended Chairman of CIEDP and Bisnhu Bhandari its member.

Sunil Ranjan Singh, Dr. Gangadhar Adhikari and Sarita Thapa have been recommended as members for the commission from NC.

A recommendation committee headed by Former Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra had recommended the names to Minister for Law Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal.

The main opposition NC and ruling NCP had agreed to forward bills related to the commission to Parliament for endorsement.

These two bodies, which had been formed in 2015 to address transitional justice, had been lying defunct for years due to political interference.

Over 16,000 people were killed and about 1,400 disappeared during the civil war fought between the Nepal Army and the Maoists.
