KATHMANDU: Chairman of the Federal Council of Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal Dr Baburam Bhattarai has criticized the endorsement of the Dipayal High Court on the life sentence slapped on Resham Chaudhary, its party leader, over the Tikapur incident.

Taking to Twitter, Dr Bhattarai said that laws and courts are established to protect the status quo.

“It’s not new for court to consider lawmaker Resham Chadhary, Laxman Tharu and others, who were spearheading a campaign to free oppressed Tharus guilty.”

He further said; “It is an irony that the Tharu rebellion has been considered a crime under the regime of those heroes of Jhapa rebellion and the decade-long People’s War.”

This injustice, Bhattarai said, is intolerable. “Salute to Tharu heroes!”

It may be recalled that Prime Minister KP Oli was involved in the Jhapa rebellion some five decades back in which several people were hacked to death by the group.

A bench of justices Sitaram Mandal and Tek Narayan Kunwar had on Thursday endorsed a life sentence slapped on Resham Chaudhary, and others by the Kailali District Court.

Resham was one of the the main accused of the Tikpaur incident in which eight police personnel, including an SSP of Nepal Police and a toddler were killed on August 24, 2015.
