Details of COVID-19 spending will be made public in Parliament: PM Oli

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has said that the details of the expenses incurred for prevention, control and treatment of coronavirus will be presented in Parliament.

Replying to questions raised in the National Assembly on the budget for the coming fiscal year on Thursday, Prime Minister Oli said that there was an arrangement for internal audit and Auditor General to monitor government expenditure and their annual reports would be submitted to the parliament.

“I have already said that I will neither do corruption nor allow others to be involved in corruption. There are bodies to look after the accounts,” he said.

Prime Minister Oli said that action would be taken according to the law if anyone was found to have indulged in corruption even during the pandemic.

On a separate note, he said that the number of deaths from coronavirus is low in Nepal due to the immunity power of Nepalis.

Stating that only 20 deaths have been confirmed when over 7,000 have been infected, the prime minister said that they didn’t die only due to coronavirus but due to other underlying medical conditions.

“So far, more than 7,000 people have been infected. This are the statistics of yesterday (Wednesday). The death toll is 20. This is less than in other countries. Not all deaths are due to coronavirus,” he said.

The prime minister accepted that the quarantines could not be systematized, adding that the government was having difficulty managing the quarantines due influx of people from India.

Prime Minister Oli told the House that the government has decided to relax the lockdown keeping in mind the impact on the daily life of the people.

The Prime Minister said that the government is working on mitigating the impact on the health of the people when the lockdown is eased.

“The government is sensitive to the health of the people,” he said.
