KATHMANDU: As Nepal is currently in a lockdown in an effort to contain the spread of novel coronavirus, the World Food Program (WFP), a UN agency, has warned of a widespread food insecurity in the country.
A WFP Nepal Office report, “Nepal COVID-19: Food Security & Vulnerability Update,” has warned that significant reductions in harvest of wheat and winter crops, as well as in the planting of rice and summer crops could lead to widespread food insecurity and even have implications for food security in the price and availability issues in the country.
It has also expressed its concern that restriction of people’s movement could impact crop harvest.
The WFP report says this period marks the start of the wheat harvest, however, the restrictions on people’s movement combined with the shortage of daily agricultural wage labor could impact the final harvest.
