ALABAMA: House of Representatives of Alabama has endorsed a bill ending a ban on yoga in Alabama schools.
Yoga was earlier prohibited in the schools of Alabama since 1993.
Under the existing law, yoga instruction was prohibited in Alabama public schools.
Now that the House has authorized local boards of education to offer yoga classes to students in grades K to 12, subject to the following that instruction shall be an elective activity.
Hindus in the state had been lobbying lawmakers of Alabama to approve the bill that would allow yoga in schools.
Several public universities and city governments in Alabama already offered yoga. Likewise, many churches in Alabama hosted yoga classes.
Yoga is considered a mental and physical discipline.
