NWA demands action against culprits committing rape in quarantine

KATHMANDU: Nepal Women’s Association (NWA) has demanded stern action against the perpetrators of the incident of a gang rape on a woman who had been sleeping in the night in a quarantine at Lamki of Kailali district.

NWA is the sister organisation of the Nepali Congress, the main opposition party in parliament.

NWA president Uma Regmi, through a press release on Tuesday, called for providing justice and compensation to the victim and sternest action against the culprits of the incident.

“The NWA has been stunned by the inhuman incident of gang rape on a woman who had been sleeping during the night in a quarantine at Lamki of Kailali on June 14, by four persons including health workers and volunteers,” reads the press release.

It stated that the unsystematic quarantines have become the ‘pit’ for violence against women. NWA president Regmi has stated that 1,684 women have faced violence inside quarantines during the lockdown period and several such incidents have not come out.

Stating that such incidents of violence against women have been increasing, NWA has urged the government to provide security to the citizens and to take effective steps to save them from disease and hunger in such adverse situation.
