Tharu community observes Maghi Festival in Kathmandu (In pics)



KATHMANDU: People belonging to the Tharu community in Kathmandu Valley are celebrating Maghi festival with much fanfare.

Maghi is the biggest festival of Tharu people, which marks the community’s new year. The festival is celebrated for a week.

During the festival, Tharus clean and decorate their houses to welcome their New Year, while also performing Shakiya Naach, a special dance organized during the festival.

Similarly, they celebrated this festival by getting together as a family and friends, get together in  mela, dressing up in the traditional Tharu wear, eating, drinking and making merry.

On this day, the sun is believed to start moving toward the Northern Hemisphere. Tharus also select the leaders for weddings, farmers and cowherds, among others, during the festival.
