KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Oli appointed Bishnu Paudel, who played a conciliatory role in the unification of the erstwhile CPN-UML and the then Maoist (Center), as the Minister of Finance on Wednesday.

Also the General Secretary of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), Paudel has already served as the Minister of Finance from November 2015 to August 2016.

Born in Syangja in 1959, Paudel is the current Member of Parliament from Rupandehi constituency-2.

Paudel has also served as the Defense Minister from February 2011 to August 2011, during the premiership of Jhalanath Khanal.

Likewise, was the Minister for Water Resources from August 2008 to May 2009 under the then Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

It should be noted that Paudel also served as the Minister for Youth, Sports and Culture in March 1997 under the then Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand.

Meanwhile, Paudel’s contribution in the unification of the erstwhile CPN-UML and erstwhile Maoist (Center) has been remarkable. Therefore, he has been seen as a conciliatory figure within the NCP.

He has also played an effective role in resolving the dispute between PM KP Oli and Nepal Communist Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on party issues.

Paudel was earlier also entrusted with the responsibility to lead a six-member task-force to resolve the party intra-party disputes

Party sources said Paudel played an effective role in the unification process of the two parties and because of which he was given the responsibility of the General Secretary of the Nepal Communist Party.

He has held various key positions in the party, including the then CPN-UML and the current Nepal Communist Party.

As a member of a delegation, he has participated in the 50th General Assembly of the United Nations.
