Jugal landslide update: 35 missing, 27 houses buried in Lidi landslide



SINDHUPALCHOWK: As many as 35 pepole have gone missing and 27 houses have been buried in the landslide that hit Lidi village in Jugal rural municipality of Sindhupalchowk district, according to Peshlal Dong, a local.

However, it is yet to officially confirmed by the District Police Office, Sindhupalchowk.  According to SP Madhav Prasad Kafle of DPO, Sindhupalchowk, a rescue team is currently collecting the details and taking stock of the incident.

Earlier, 21 people were reported to have gone missing in the landslide that struck at 6 am today.

Jugal rural municipality chief Homnarayan Shrestha earlier said 13 houses were buried. Thirteen among those members from five houses who went missing in the landslide have been ascertained, according to Shrestha.

According to Sirjana Tamang, Deputy Chief of the rural municipality, 15 people injured in the landslide have managed to come out of the landslide themselves.

People of the other houses buried by the landslide have taken shelter on a nearby hillock  above the incident site for safety.

A rescue team from Nepal Police, Nepal Army and Armed Police Force has reached the incident site and are carrying out rescue work, said Administrative Officer Sunita Pahari of District Administration Office.

According to Ash Bahadur Tamang, a local, the landslide occurred due to a huge explosion detonated earlier in the course of digging a tunnel for the 26-megawatt Balefi A hydropower. The blast had shaken the entire village, claimed Tamang.

The villagers had then submitted a memo at the DAO complaining that more than 500 houses in Nampha, Sanchagaun, Lidi, Jhulke, Nimlung, Baisang were at risk of landslides due to the explosion.
