33 staff, officials of National Sports Council resign

KATHMANDU: With the enforcement of Sports Act 2020, as many as 33 staff and officials of the National Sports Council (NSC) have resigned with effect from last Thursday.

They resigned since the promulgation of Sports Act 2020 as the newly introduced Act forbids the incumbent staff including Member Secretary, coaches and others from holding national unions of the sports organizations.

Citing that when the council’s staff and coaches are affiliated to the national union, the sports activities are influenced adversely, the new Act has included this provision.

The new Act has made the provision of declaring the national unions invalid provided they include the member secretary and other staff NSC.

In addition to declaring such unions void, the new Act has the provision of taking action against such office bearers provided they hold the post disregarding the new amendment.

Earlier, claiming that National Sports Union help to mobilize the sports sector, the Council had decided to deploy the staff and office bearers to various national unions.

In harmony with the decision of the Council, many national unions have been including the NSC staff in their union believing that it would facilitate the sports activities.
