Vultures increasing at Mainamaini



UDAYPUR: The number of vulture has increased at Mainamaini of Belaka Municipality-7 in the district after the municipality launched a vulture conservation campaign two years back.

Sugachari area of Mainamaini is the habitat of vultures which are found also in the eastern hilly and Tarai districts. As recent as two years back, there were less than 500 vultures, but after the conservation campaign, the number increased to some 700, according to municipality.

The vultures which fly up to Khotang, Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, Dhankuta, Tehrathum, Panchthar, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and Sapatari, among others in search of food finally arrive at Sugachari Bhir in the evening, said 78-year-old Harkaman Rai from Mainamani.

Municipality Mayor Durga Kumar Thapa said the municipality brought the conservation plan to protect the endangered species of bird.

The dead domestic animals are taken to Sugachari Bhir of Mainamaini for feeding the bird. It is arranged by the municipality. It has also been creating public awareness on importance of bird conservation.

In this connection, the municipality is inviting a team of ornithologists to study the species of vultures here. RSS
