SOLUKHUMBU: Eleven migrant workers working at a company in Malaysia have been stranded for past five months due to COVID-19 outbreak.

Ghanshyam Shrestha, a permanent resident of Solukhumbu district currently working in the Alpha Company in Malaysia, said they were stranded as their visa was terminated five months back and are now compelled to stay there due to pandemic.

He argued that they could not return home as regular international flights to and from Kathmandu are halted for past five months.

According to Shrestha, the stranded workers frequently filled up the online form to returning Nepal but were failing to bear the costly air fare in chartered flights.

He said they have to bear extra 50 per cent airfare for chartered flights. Another migrant worker Nir Kumar Tamang complained that the company does not bear extra charge to send them back home.

The victims complained that they were facing hardship as they are jobless for past five months in foreign land.

The stranded migrant workers are Tamang of Jhapa, Bikas and Raju Bishwakarma of Dharan, Nikhil Poudel of Bhaktapur, Sundar Mal of Chitwan, Amar Acharya and Amrit Gurung of Baglung, Bhim Bahadur Magar of Gorkha and Badri Yadav of Siraha.
