Monsoon mayhem claims 77 lives, 42 missing



KATHMANDU: According to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), landslides and floods have claimed the lives of 77 people with 42 missing cases.

The death toll, counted by including all types of natural disasters like fire, snakebite, thunderbolts, and other natural calamities from June 12, the number stood at 130 in a month, Joint Secretary Murari Wosti at the NDRRMA told The Rising Nepal.

According to NDRRMA, 52 people have sustained injury due to the floods and landslides within the period. As per the latest casualty report of the Authority, the highest human loss took place in Myagdi’s landslide with 27 deaths.

Similarly, 10 died in landslides of Jajarkot, seven in Kaski, and three in Sindhupalchowk, last week. According to the Authority, 27 people died in the landslides that occurred at Dhaulagiri, Malika and Raghuganga Gaunpalikas of Myagdi district due to heavy rains that took place after July 9. Four are still missing in Myagdi landslides, Joint Secretary Wosti said.

Likewise, 10 persons were killed in landslides in Borekot Gaunpalika-4 and other villages of Jajarkot district after July 9. In these disasters, five people went missing.

In Kaski, so far seven people have been killed in landslides at Sarangkot and other villages with 13 missing cases. Five people were killed in landslides in Sarangkot, and one each in Hemja and Paitedanda of Kaski, according to the record.

Also, in the landslides and floods in Sindhupalchowk, 20 persons are still missing with three deaths. Similarly, 10 people are missing in Sankhuwasabha and four each in Myagdi and Jajarkot district.

In the last one month (June 12-July 12), thunderbolts took lives of 17 people and injured 42.
