China grants agreemo to proposed ambassador Pandey

BEIJING: China has granted agreemo to the proposed Nepali Ambassador to China Mahendra Bahadur Pandey.

According to Ministry for Foreign Affairs sources, China has sent the agreemo to the embassy on Friday.

Agreemo is the term used to refer to a memorandum from one nation to another agreeing to the appointment of the ambassador. After the consent from Chinese side, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari will appoint him and swear him to office.

After swearing in, the newly appointed ambassador will head for Beijing after a formal meeting here in Nepal.

Earlier, the meeting of the Council of Ministers held on March 1 had decided to call Lila Mani Poudyal, then ambassador to China and nominate former Foreign Minister Pandey in his place.

The government decision to call relatively good performing ambassador to China some eight months prior to the maturity of his term in office had called wide criticism against the government.

Pandey who had not got chance to take in office despite being recommended for the post by KP Oli-led joint government due to the fall of coalition government, was waiting for the agreemo impatiently.

Pandey was an associated professor of Tribhuvan University from 1975 to 1994.

Nepal’s ambassador to China has to execute his duty as the non-residential ambassador to Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the People’s Republic of Mangolia.
