KATHMANDU: The 298th Prithvi Jayanti is being observed with zeal and gratitude across the country on Sunday.

The day is being observed at the people’s level amid demands for declaration of the Jayanti as National Unity Day and a public holiday.

Though not yet convinced to mark it as a National Unity Day with an honorific public holiday, even the top leaders ranging from the President of the country to the party leaders and commoners all observed the day with zeal and a sense of gratitude.

Earlier, President Bidya Devi Bhandari extended her best wishes to all Nepalis living in and outside Nepal on the occasion of the 298th birth anniversary of the historical personality.

Issuing a message, President Bhandari has said that the bravery, courage, and efficiency our ancestors have helped maintain Nepal as an independent and sovereign country since ancient times.

She has applauded the unification campaign initiated by Prithvi Narayan Shah and appealed all to heed the ideology of Shah, who regarded people as supreme as that is still relevant even in modern federal Nepal.

In her statement, she has reiterated the need to further strengthen national unity and involve ourselves towards building a prosperous, self-reliant and self-dependent economy.

Similarly, Prime Minister KP Oli has extended his wishes on the occasion of the Prithvi Jayanti.
