Gold smuggling via TIA on the rise as high prices boost appeal

KATHMANDU: Gold smuggling through Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has increased of late, following a surge in the price of the precious yellow metal.

As gold price is setting new records in the domestic market, more incidents of its smuggling through the country only international airport have come to the fore.

If the data from the Nepali month of Ashoj (Sept/Oct) is taken into reference, security personnel had seized 2.37 kilograms gold at TIA.

During the month, the precious yellow metal was traded at a low of Rs 71,300 per tola to a maximum of Rs 71,800 per tola.

Chief of TIA Customs Raj Kumar Adhikari says that gold smugglings surge with the increase in the gold prices.

“Chinese and Indian nationals are more involved in smuggling gold through different means,” he said.
