Kalanki pile-up update: Death toll climbs to 3



KATHMANDU: The death toll in the Kalanki road accident that occurred on Friday night has reached three after one more body was found under the wheels of the container van involved in the accident.

The accident took place when a container van, Pradesh 2-03001 Kha 1420, heading to Kalanki from Thankot met with the accident due to brake failure.

According to SP Ashok Singh of Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, the deceased have been identified as 30-year-old Shankar Damai (Pariyar) and Ranjit Kumar Chaudhari of Okhaldhunga.

Pariyar died on the spot while Chaudhari breathed his last in the course of treatment at the hospital, said Singh while the identity of the other found under the wheels of the  truck this morning is yet to be ascertained.

Similarly, Ganesh Sharma, 30, Sajan Khatri, 22, Ram Chandra Simkhada of Dhading, Sujan Manandhar of Kalanki, Bishal Shrestha of Baneshwor and Sandhya Singh of Kaski sustained injuries in the accident. They are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the Kathmandu Valley, said police.

The cargo truck had hit a taxi, Ba 2 Ja 2047, a pick-up van, Ba 4 Cha 221, a bus, Ba 4 Kha 3252, and a motorcycle, Ba 51 Pa 4951 in the accident that occurred near Kalika Petrol Pump in Kalanki.

The speeding truck which went out of control also broke down the wall of a house, said Police Inspector Purusottam Karki of Metropolitan Traffic Police Sector, Kalanki.
