Protests held in different parts of Nepal against ‘China’s repression of Uyghurs’



KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Muslim community has protested in various parts of the country against Chinese repression of Muslims.

They staged protests demanding an end to the ongoing repression and exploitation in China against Uyghur Muslims.

Demonstrations have been held in Kathmandu, Bhairahawa and Biratnagar under the leadership of Jamiat Ulama-E-Nepal.

Jamiat Ulama-E-Nepal, Kathmandu Advisor Yunus Hamur said that China, which is committing heinous crimes by suppressing the Uyghur community, has imposed a ban on the culture of the Muslim community.

Noting that members of the Muslim community are also in favor of peace, he demanded that the right to live as freely as that of people of other faiths be guaranteed.

Demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Stop the atrocities of Uyghur Muslims in China,” “Give freedom to Uyghur Muslims, and “Restore the human rights of Uyghur Muslims.”

Participants in the protest marched from the Old Bus Park in Kathmandu to the Padma Kanya Campus.

They also staged a sit-in in front of the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu today.

Similarly, protests were staged in Bhairahawa and Biratnagar.

The Chinese government has reportedly detained more than a million Uyghurs in reeducation camps. Chinese officials maintain that what they called vocational training centers do not infringe on Uyghurs’ human rights.

A UN committee has said China has detained about a million Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. Chinese Police are keeping a close eye on millions of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang province, according to a report by Human Rights Watch.
