Janata Samajwadi Party decides to vote in favor of constitution amendment

KATHMANDU: The Janata Samajwadi Party has decided to vote in favor of the constitution amendment bill.

A meeting of the party’s office-bearers held on Friday decided to that effect.

“Today’s meeting of the party has decided to vote in favor of the bill to amend the constitution of Nepal,” said Janata Samajwadi Party Chairman Upendra Yadav.

The party is preparing to issue a whip to its lawmakers on the issue of amending the constitution. For that, the party has called a meeting of the Parliamentary Party for 11 am on Saturday.

Party leader Sarat Singh Bhandari also said that he had suggested leader Sarita Giri to withdraw the amendment proposal registered on the amendment.

Samajwadi Party MP Giri has registered an amendment proposal on the constitution amendment bill brought by the government to include the new map.

The party has already given her a letter warning her to take action if the amendment is not withdrawn.

The voting of the bill is scheduled for Saturday.

Minister for Law Shivamaya Tumbahamphe had tabled the bill to amend Schedule 3 related to Article 9 (2) of the Constitution for including an updated map that includes Limpiyadhura, Lipu Lekh and Kalapani on May 31.

The government had tabled the bill for the amendment of the constitution to make room for the change in the map used in the national emblem.

Nepal has taken the stand that Limpiyadhura is the origin of the Kali River and thereby the land east of Kali River belongs to Nepal as per the Sugauli Treaty.
