KATHMANDU: Although the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the development works especially the national pride projects, the national pride projects in the irrigation sector are making strides, according to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation.
The Ministry, in its first quarterly review of these projects in the current fiscal year, noted that performance of six national pride projects was satisfactory.
Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Barshaman Pun held a virtual meeting with the secretary of his Ministry and the line agencies as well as the chiefs of the projects for three consecutive days to take stock of those projects.
Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project, Sunkoshi-Marine Diversion, Sikta, Rani Jamara Kulariya, Babai Irrigation Project and Mahakali Irrigation Project are national pride projects under the Irrigation Projects.
Sunkoshi-Marine Diversion is expected to provide irrigation facility to 122,000 hectare of land. Likewise Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project is expected to irrigate 51,000 hectares of land, Sikta Irrigation is likely to irrigate 42,700 hectares of land, Mahakali Irrigation Project 35,000 hectares of land.
Similarly, 20,300 hectares would be irrigated by the Rani-Jamara Kulariya upon its completion.
Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project is expected to generate 47 megawatts of electricity, Sunkoshi-Marine Diversion 30 megawatts of electricity and Rani-Jamara Kulariya 4.7 megawatts.
Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project has achieved 40 per cent physical progress, Sikta Irrigation Project 60 per cent, Babai 47 per cent, it was told.
Enlisted in the national pride project in the current fiscal, Mahakali Irrigation Project has achieved 10 per cent of physical progress, it was shared in the meeting.
The construction of dam at Dhaap site in the headwater of the Nagmati, the main tributary to the Bagmati River has been picking a pace lately.
The recently held virtual meeting has decided to implement irrigation and water resources management projects in other parts of the country as well.
Minister Pun instructed the concerned authorities to address the issues as soon as they arise and apprise him of the issues if they were unable to resolve.
“Seek the solutions to the issues yourselves first. If unable to resolve them, let me know. I pledge to find solutions to those issues through political means.”
