KATHMANDU: Main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) is making preparations to postpone the date of 14th General Convention of the party.

NC has scheduled to hold its 14th General Convention in the Kathmandu Valley on February 19-22, 2021 .

According to NC sources, President Sher Bahadur Deuba has entrusted Vice Chairman Bimalendra Nidhi to call a central committee meeting in the last week of September in coordination with senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel.

Speaking at an interaction organized on the 107th birth anniversary of BP Koirala, former General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula urged the establishment to call a central committee meeting to discuss the date of the general convention.

Sitaula said it was impossible to hold the 14 the General Convention in February arguing that the active membership distribution work has been impacted by the COVID-19.

With the surge in coronavirus infection cases impacting the distribution of active membership, the main opposition Nepali Congress is unlikely to hold the Convention on the stipulated date.

Even though Paudel faction has also realized that holding the general convention in February in 2021 is impossible, he is not ready to float the proposal to postpone it.

They have fear that if the date for the convention is postponed, the establishment will delay it for a long time.

The 14th General Convention of the NC must be held every four years as per the party’s statute.
Six months of one year term extended based on the provision of ‘special circumstances’ has also elapsed by.

If the NC fails to hold the convention on the stipulated date, it can be extended by six months and held by mid-September 2021 as per the party statute.
